IMB Appointment Service

We had the privilege of attending the Appointment Service for New Missionaries of the International Mission Board last Friday evening at Southern Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. We attended to watch some friends get appointed.

Jerry Rankin, President of the IMB, gave a most stirring charge to the new missionaries and to those who were in attendance. Paul Chitwood, Chairman of the Board of Trustees gave a rousing report of the work of the IMB, and Anthony Jordan, President of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma gave the final prayer. We also got to see some other friends who are now back in Oklahoma.

If you ever get an opportunity to attend an appointment service, I highly recommend it. It is uplifting and encouraging; challenging and convicting.

African Memories

We had a wonderful visit with some wonderful friends from Africa. We first met the Freese's in 1997 in Maryland. Then, they took very good care of us when we lived in Guinea, West Africa.
They arrived here from West Africa last week and spent a couple of days with our friends, Wyman and Michelle Dobbs and family in Sallisaw. We went to pick them up last week and brought them here to Wagoner. We showed them around a little, but enjoyed our visit more than anything.

Here are the Freese, Dobbs, and Boyne kids.

Grandmother Update

My grandmother is back in the hospital, this time at St. John's in Tulsa. They are treating her pneumonia and my sister said she seemed like she was getting some better.

Please continue to pray for her recovery.

Terri Garr

I have been a fan of Terri Garr for most of my life. She is a hilariously funny actress with great facial expression. I loved her in Mr. Mom, Close Encounters, & Young Frankenstein and on M*A*S*H and Friends. (She was PERFECT as Phoebe's mother!)

She was on David Letterman last night. I had no idea she was suffering from MS and recovering from a brain aneurysm. I felt so sorry for her, except that she had such a great attitude about the whole thing.

Cool Invitation

This past week, my older daughter, Audrey, received an invitation to attend the Presidential Inauguration in Washington, DC, in March!

It is a wonderful honor, but we simply don't have the money to send her. We are so proud of her for all of her accomplishments. She is a great daughter.

Grandmother Update

My grandmother is home, but is still battling pneumonia. She is extremely weak and is having severe difficulty resting/sleeping.

My mother is taking care of her and thinks that she is getting a little better. Home Health is coming as well, to monitor her situation.

Please continue to pray for "Meme".

Big Announcement!

My older daughter, Audrey, attended Falls Creek week before last with my friend, Martin Whipple's church, Emmanuel Baptist Church in Enid. While there, she felt God's calling her to surrender herself to overseas missions!

Due to some extenuating circumstances, she wasn't able to "go forward" during the invitation time at Falls Creek, but she made her calling known at church yesterday.

It comes as no surprise, but now I am beginning to understand what my parents felt when I told them the same thing, so many years ago.

She is a marvelous young lady with a heart for God and a heart for the lost. Please join us praying, supporting, and guiding Audrey in this new journey in her walk with our Lord.

Problems

This has been a very busy, problem filled weekend. Last Thursday night, my grandmother had to be taken to Muskogee Regional Medical Center because she couldn't breathe. She spent the night in the ER. At 8 am Friday morning, she was finally put in a room. At about 10:30 Friday morning, she was rushed to Intermediate Care ICU because her blood pressure bottomed out. As time progressed, her condition worsened. To make the long story short, the doctor said that her body was filled with infection and if she hadn't been brought to the hospital when she was, she would not have survived. She is currently doing better, but still has a very long road ahead of her.

I spent Friday night with her in ICU and finally left at about 4:30 am. I am terribly disappointed in myself because it absolutely wiped me out on Saturday. I guess I'm not as young as I used to be! Ha!

Audrey was away at Falls Creek last week. She attended with my friend's, Martin Whipple, kids through Emmanuel Baptist Church in Enid. She wanted to attend an "after camp" party Sunday night. To make that long story short, I drove to pick her up on Monday. When we got back, we went to Muskogee to see Sally at work and to see my grandmother.

Please pray for my grandmother. She is currently back in a regular room, but doesn't seem to be able to rest and to sleep. Her vital signs are good; the doctors are encouraged. Pray that God would continue to heal her. Thanks...

The Bible Vs. The Book of Mormon

Here is a thought provoking documentary on the similarities and differences between the Bible and the Book of Mormon. It is a long program, but well worth the watch.

It brings out these important points:

  • There is no archaeological evidence to support the location of any city named in the Americas listed in the BoM.
  • There are no pottery or pottery shards to show evidence of any of the tribes named in the BoM.
  • There are no independent historical evidences by surrounding civilizations that any of the tribes listed in the BoM ever existed.
  • There have been no coins found from any civilization listed in the BoM.
  • There are no evidences of any of the great battles fought in BoM.
  • There are a few historical mistakes listed: horses did not exist in the Americas until westerners brought them from Europe; metallurgy did not exist in the Americas until Europeans brought it; machinery did not exist in the Americas until Europeans brought it; wheat and barley did not exist in the Americas until Europeans brought them; elephants did not exist in the Americas a the time of the civilizations in the BoM.
  • The BoM says that Jesus was born in Jerusalem.
  • The BoM says that Lehi and his sons, being Jewish, built a new Jewish Temple in the Americas. This could not be so, as they, being Jewish, knew that the only true temple could be in Jerusalem. There is no evidence that this temple ever existed in the Americas.
There are many other things for consideration as well.

Tornado Sirens

Last night, we had a strong storm front move through Wagoner. We were under a tornado warning and the sirens were sounded. No tornado hit Wagoner, although I did capture video of the main gust front with straight-line winds of around 60 mph. If you want to hear the sirens, you'll need to move to 4:20 in the video.

Where were you 19 years ago?

Today is the 19th anniversary of the Tienanmen Square Massacre. It was the violent, bloody end of the Democracy Movement that started at Peking University on April 15, 1989.

I was in Hong Kong, serving as a Journeyman for the IMB. I was watching it unfold on TV. In the days to follow, there were violent protests in Hong Kong and everyone was afraid that China was going to come roaring through Lion Rock Tunnel in their tanks to go ahead and take HK back.

Today, it seems, it is mostly forgotten, at least by western media. No one under the age of 25 in China knows anything at all about it. It is a forbidden to teach about it and talk about it.

I was in Tienanmen Square exactly one year after the Democracy Movement started. Tensions were high. I wasn't supposed to be taking pictures, but I did anyway. I'm glad I did, too, because all evidence of the military operation by the PLA have been removed.

Here is where the Chinese tanks rolled up on the steps (and presumably the protesters, too)

Here, you can see the outline of a burned body, still visible in the marble after one year.

This is how the monument looked in 2004. You aren't even allowed to climb the steps and there is a now a grassy area around it.

Indiana Jones & the Crystal Skull

I've been waiting for this movie since it was announced. Sally and I went out to dinner and to see it last night, since both of the kids are away.

The only thing good about last evening was the company.

We went to Rib Crib; one of my favorite places. I ordered the Pulled Pork Dinner (as always). I think I must have gotten yesterday's leftovers. It was so greasy I couldn't eat it. At least the manager didn't charge me for it.

We went to see Indiana Jones. I knew who the bad guys were before the shootin' started. I must say I was really disappointed overall. There were some really good chase scenes. But, there was just simply TOO MUCH that was too far fetched, even for Indiana Jones. It was nice to see Miriam again. Like I said, the chase scenes were good, but, WOW! I don't want to blow it for you if you haven't seen it, so I won't give away the ending. All in all, I'm glad I saw it, but I don't think I'll go see it again or even buy the video.

June already?

I can hardly believe it is already June! Where has the time gone?

Audrey has gone off to her first week at Falls Creek and Emily is staying with my folks. We got our Economic Stimulus Check last Saturday, which is good, because it looks like I'm gonna need 3 (which means 4) new tires soon.

The weather man says it's gonna be 96 on Wednesday; I'm not looking forward to a hot summer.

I'm hoping to get all caught up with my work this week so I can go fishing with Dad on Friday. We'll see if that actually happens!

Have a great week!
